How to get the current time in milliseconds
Methods to get the time in milliseconds since the UNIX epoch (January 1, 1970 00:00:00 UTC) in various programming languages.

What is epoch time?
The Unix epoch (or Unix time or POSIX time or Unix timestamp) is the number of seconds that have elapsed since January 1, 1970 (midnight UTC/GMT), not counting leap seconds (in ISO 8601: 1970-01-01T00:00:00Z). Literally speaking the epoch is Unix time 0 (midnight 1/1/1970), but 'epoch' is often used as a synonym for Unix time. Some systems store epoch dates as a signed 32-bit integer, which might cause problems on January 19, 2038 (known as the Year 2038 problem or Y2038). The converter on this page converts timestamps in seconds (10-digit), milliseconds (13-digit) and microseconds (16-digit) to readable dates.

Millis is the popular abbreviation for milliseconds. The formal one would be ms. Another one is millisecs but this is very rare.
Convert from human-readable date to epoch long epoch = new java.text.SimpleDateFormat("MM/dd/yyyy HH:mm:ss").parse("01/01/1970 01:00:00").getTime() / 1000; Timestamp in seconds, remove '/1000' for milliseconds.

Epoch & Unix Timestamp Converter
Converts an epoch/unix timestamp into a human readable date. It also lets you do the inverse, i.e. converts a human readable date into an epoch/unix timestamp. It also displays the current epoch/unix timestamp in both seconds and milliseconds.

Epoch, also known as Unix timestamps, is the number of seconds (not milliseconds!) that have elapsed since January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 GMT (1970-01-01 00:00:00 GMT).

In many modern programming languages, date objects make use of epoch as a starting point from which they compute the inner date value. For example, in Java, the java.lang.Date class is set with the number of milliseconds that have elapsed since epoch.

What is milliseconds since epoch?
Epoch, also known as Unix timestamps, is the number of seconds (not milliseconds!) that have elapsed since January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 GMT (1970-01-01 00:00:00 GMT). ... Date class is set with the number of milliseconds that have elapsed since epoch.

How do you convert milliseconds to date?
String myDate = "2014/10/29 18:10:45"; SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy/MM/dd HH:mm:ss"); Date date = sdf. parse(myDate); long millis = date. getTime(); Still, be careful because in Java the milliseconds obtained are the milliseconds between the desired epoch and 1970-01-01 00:00:00.

How do I convert epoch to date?
parseLong(epochTime); //convert seconds to milliseconds Date date = new Date(unix_seconds * 1000 L); // format of the date SimpleDateFormat jdf = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss"); String java_date = jdf. format(date); //System. out. println("\n" + java_date + "\n"); IDataUtil.

What is an epoch date?
In a computing context, an epoch is the date and time relative to which a computer's clock and timestamp values are determined. The epoch traditionally corresponds to 0 hours, 0 minutes, and 0 seconds (00:00:00) Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on a specific date, which varies from system to system.

Why is Jan 1 1970 the epoch?
It explains that the early Unix engineers picked that date arbitrarily, because they needed to set a uniform date for the start of time, and New Year's Day, 1970, seemed most convenient. Unix isn't born in 1970. The Unix epoch is midnight on January 1, 1970.

Is epoch time same everywhere?
The definition of UNIX timestamp is timezone independent.
