Ten centuries later, that palace of joy that the Muslim monarch Al-Muqtadir dreamed of continues to be, together with the Alhambra in Granada and the Mosque of Cordoba, one of the artistic jewels of the Muslim presence in southern Europe. UNESCO, in 2001, declared the Mudejar art of Aragon a World Heritage Site, highlighting that the Aljafería Palace is one of the most representative monuments of the Mudejar, which has become the symbol of Aragonese civil architecture and, probably, in one of the obligatory references of Spanish history and culture. More than three million visitors, since the restoration started in the mid-eighties, testify.

Our visitors, when they access the monument, not only meet the beautiful arches of the Islamic palace, which contrast with the imposing presence of the Troubadour tower, a space in which Giuseppe Verdi developed a part of his romantic action in the opera Il Trovatore, but also tour the medieval palace of the Kings of Aragon, with the alfarjes that cover their rooms, or the part that was built on the north wing of the Islamic enclosure by the Catholic Monarchs, in which their Throne Hall is amazed with the spectacular roof of gilded and polychrome wood.

The Aljafería has lived various avatars, changes and stages. Many Aragonese still remember their barracks status in the twentieth century. But today, the restoration work of the monument in its last phase is finished, it is a live and open building, a cultural reference, which shows its long history and welcomes within its walls the institution that represents all Aragonese: Las Cortes de Aragon.
