Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky was one of the greatest Russian writers and among the best international writers, and his works have had a profound and lasting impact on literature of the twentieth century. His characters are always in the extreme states of despair and on the edge of the abyss, and his novels contain a deep understanding of the human soul and also provide insightful analysis of the political, social and spiritual state of Russia at that time. Many of his well-known works are an inspiration to contemporary thought and literature. Dostoyevsky was arrested and sent to prison on April 23, 1849, as a member of the Free Thinking Group.
