Hey, Dr. Chris here – I know, I know – there are LOTS of fitness apps out there.

As a primary care doctor and exercise researcher at Penn State, I wanted an app that helped my patients use build strength, so they could feel better and do things more easily. Most of my patients are over 40 and by 40 people start to notice that they’re not as strong as they used to be.

After reading about how effective very short interval workouts, called Sprint Interval Training, could be – I wanted to help my patients use this new hack.

The research showed that these workouts were very effective, which I knew because I did it myself. But these workouts were either buried deep in most exercise apps – or not there at all.

WHAT MAKES FASTER WORKOUTS DIFFERENT?

SAVE TIME.

We use three research-proven hacks to give you a full-body workout in just 3-5 minutes.

Hack 1. Keep intensity high.

You have to try very hard. Faster Workouts is hard but short. We will keep increasing the weight every single day, so long as you can do 10 repetitions. If you wait until 15 repetitions, it will take you MUCH longer to get stronger.

Hack 2. Use only multi-joint exercises.

You can do 15 exercises that work 1 muscle or 3 exercises that each work 5 - like we do in Faster Workouts. Both methods are equally effective but one – obviously – takes 5 times as long.

Hack 3. Do only ONE set of each exercise.

Dozens of studies have proven that almost all (80%) of the strength gain comes from the first few sets of an exercise each week. The first set of each exercise gets you 80% of the strength gain and the next two get you only 20% more.

SIMPLIFY STRENGTH TRAINING.

Weight training – also called resistance training - has lots of decisions, especially if you’re just starting out.

How much weight should I use? How many repetitions should I do? When to increase? How hard is it to work?

WHO IS DR. CHRIS?

I’m Dr. Chris Sciamanna, a primary care doctor and exercise researcher at Penn State.

This is my workout. It’s what I do every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 7AM. This is all the exercise I do to keep my 54 year old body able to play tennis with my 20 year old son.

Over the past decade, research shows that shorter workouts are just as effective but, because no one would drive to the gym for a 5 minute workout, it’s not something your gym wants you to know.

So I started Faster Workouts to focus ONLY on these shorter options because people are busy and I know they like to save time.

Faster Workouts are for people who are able to try hard for a short period of time, but who are either too busy or just don’t like lifting weights. No shame in that, I don’t even like it myself.

What I do like is feeling strong and knowing that I can do anything that I decide I want to do, without struggling, all because of a few minutes of hard work each week.
