The protagonist of "The Adventures of the Baron of Münchhausen" is not an invented figure but a historical figure from Lower Saxony who, after retiring to private life in 1750, used to entertain his friends with the fable of his supposed feats. Gottfried August Bürger (1747-1794) was the author of the most widespread and popular version of these "prodigious trips through lands and seas, campaigns and festive adventures of the Baron of Münchhausen, just as he often tells them in his gathering together with a bottle" .
