This classic adventure novel written in 1837 develops the myth of the Flying Dutchman. In her episodes happen with pirates, shipwrecks, combats in unknown lands, but always originated by the halo of mystery that surrounds an old family relic bequeathed to Philip Vanderdecken, a young man who, by chance or destination, comes to run into that ship condemned to sail (with all his crew) until the Day of Judgment. Philip will discover who is the captain of that ghost ship, someone too close to him to not stop trying, by all means, to find the Flying Dutchman again.

The myth of the Flying Dutchman

According to tradition, the Flying Dutchman or Flying Dutchman (De Vliegende Hollander) is a ghost ship that can not return to port, condemned to roam forever in the world's oceans. The sailboat is always seen in the distance, sometimes shining with a ghostly light. If another ship greets you, your crew will try to get your messages to land, to people killed centuries ago. The versions of the legend are innumerable. Some say that the story is originally Dutch, while others claim that it is based on the play The Flying Dutchman (1826), by the English playwright Edward Fitzball, and in the novel The Phantom Ship ("The Phantom Ship", 1837) by Frederick Marryat, later adapted to Dutch as Het Vliegend Schip ("The flying ship") by the cleric of that nationality AHC Römer Other versions allude to the opera The Flying Dutchman by Richard Wagner (1841) and The Flying Dutchman on Tappan Sea by Washington Irving (1855).
