When the hostility and persecution of the Meccan merchants grew towards the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his followers, in 622 they moved to Medina. The inhabitants of Medina asked the prophet to live among them and arbitrate their affairs (the proposal was accepted in view of their refusal of polytheism and submission to the will only of God, Allah). From this moment, the Islamic era begins its reckoning.
