The exact day of the Hindu New Year changes every year, in accordance with the calculations in the lunar calendar. While states like Maharashtra, celebrate their Lunar New Year’s Day as Gudi Padwa, people of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Telangana celebrate it as Ugadi. Ugadi is also known as ‘Chaitra Suddha Padhyami’. The Lunar New Year's Day(Ugadi) varies every year as it begins on the first New Moon after the Spring Equinox. It generally falls between March/April of the Gregorian calendar. The name Ugadi/Yugadi originated from the Sanskrit words; ‘Yuga’(age) and ‘Adi’(starting). Ugadi celebrates the arrival of the spring season and signifies prosperity. According to Hindu mythology, the creator of the world, Lord Brahma, started his creation on this day. Thus, Lord Brahma, is worshipped on this day along with Lord Vishnu, who is the creator of ‘Yugas’(Another name of Lord Vishnu is ‘Yugaadikrit’). Each state in India celebrates the New Year in its own unique way by following customs and traditions that are exclusive to that particular region. Ugadi/ Yugadi or Samvatsaradi as per the Telugu and Kannada Hindu calendar is celebrated on the first day of the waxing phase of the moon in the month of Chaitra. This day is also called the Chitra Shukla Paksha Padyami. In fact, this day is considered the New Year day for Hindus living between the Vindhya-Kaveri belt. For celebrations, The Kannada, Marathi, Telugu and Konkani celebrate this event with great verve - begins with an elaborate oil bath ritual, followed by a visit to the nearby temple. This is followed by a feast of a certain dish including all six tastes, called the Ugadi Pacchadi in Telugu and Bevu-Bella in Kannada.
