What are they doing?

Many people worked together to create this book. June lnjie and her late mother told the story to Jessica Mathie in 2010. Jessica made an audio recording of their story and wrote it down, and Clint Taylor drew pictures to go along with the words. Montell Kelly, June's granddaughter, recorded the English. Jessica then analysed the language and began compiling this book and CD. Amanda Hamilton finished the compilation process, and Martyn Andrews provided the graphic design.

Each person's contribution was meaningful, and together we hope that readers of this book feel encouraged to support, appreciate and learn about Yinhawangka language and culture.

Yinhawangka is an Aboriginal language of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It is a member of the Ngayarda subgroup of Pama-Nyungan languages. Closely-related languages include Banyjima and Kurrama, among others. Past spellings of the language name have included lnawongga and lnawangga. In 1974, Tindale described Yinhawangka's geographic location as 'on Hardey River south of Rocklea; southeast along upper Ashburton River from Turee Creek upstream to Kunderong Range and Angelo River; south only a short distance from the main Ashburton River channel to the north of Mount Vernon Station' (Tindale 1974, viewed in South Australian Museum Archives 2013).

Today Yinhawangka is a severely endangered language. The 2011 census reported 6 speakers (SBS 2011). Most live in and around Bellary Springs community and the town of Tom Price.

Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre aims to be recognised as a leading Aboriginal language and resource centre in Australia. By working with the old people of the PiIbara, we will use our expertise, knowledge and sensitivity to record and foster Aboriginal languages, culture and history. Thus the young people remain strong in retaining their Aboriginal language, culture and history ensuring cultural continuity. The Board members are Trudy Hayes, Lorraine lnjie, Allen Lockyer, Anne Sibosado, Harry Taylor and Bruce Thomas.
