PowerShell is a new generation command line application developed by Microsoft as an alternative to Windows command line cmd.exe and Windows Script Host. A component of Windows, originally known simply as Windows PowerShell, was made open-source and cross-platform with the introduction of PowerShell Core on August 18, 2016.

In PowerShell, administrative tasks are usually performed by cmdlets (pronunciation commands), which are special .NET classes that implement a specific action. These tasks work by accessing data in different data stores, such as the file system or registry, that is available to PowerShell through providers. Also, third-party developers can add cmdlets and providers to PowerShell. Scripts can be used by other scripts and packaged into modules.
